My story

Why I built Ottr

Like most couples, my partner and I had the same argument on repeat. Who did the dishes last? Whose turn is it to vacuum? It wasn't that either of us was lazy — we just had no shared system, and no way to see how contributions balanced out over time.

I tried spreadsheets. I tried shared todo lists. None of them stuck, because they all felt like admin rather than something we'd actually want to use. The act of tracking chores felt more tedious than the chores themselves.

That's when I had the idea: what if chores felt like a game? What if logging that you'd cleaned the bathroom earned you something — not just a tick on a list, but points toward a reward you actually wanted? And what if you could see, at a glance, how both of you were contributing that week? And what if that happened almost automatically?

The software engineer in me couldn't resist, and I immediately built the first version of Ottr for my partner and I. It was scrappy, full of bugs and often required manual intervention. But, it worked. We started using it, and as both of us started collecting our first rewards, the arguments disappeared.

I started showing it to friends, and they loved it too. This made me realize, we aren't the only couple in the world with this problem. There's alternative apps around that do similar things, but they often feel like chores themselves - clunky, feature heavy, prescriptive, and not very fun to use.

Ottr isn't about keeping score in a negative way. It's about making the invisible visible, turning obligation into opportunity, and building a rhythm as a team. I've seen it transform the energy in our home — less resentment, more appreciation, and weirdly, more laughter.

I hope it does the same for yours.
